Kirk Penney seriously considered one last campaign with the Tall Blacks.
The veteran shooting guard has announced his retirement from international basketball, just a few days before Tall Blacks coach Paul Henare names his squad for the Olympic qualifying tournament.
Penney left a decision quite late just to ensure he'd thought it through.
"I'd figured it had got to a point where I was like 'I think my time has come', and I just decided to make the call. With the team being announced next week, it's good to get it out of the way so the boys can have their moment."
Penney said it's sad to pull the curtain on the black singlet, which has been such a big part of his life and playing career since 1999.
