The New Zealand bowlers have hit back after a poor start to put the Black Caps in a strong position after day one of the first cricket test against India in Kanpur.

The hosts reached 154 for one after lunch before Trent Boult with 3/57 and Mitchell Santner 3/77 helped restrict India to 291/9 at stumps.

Santner says it's been a satisfying day and after losing the toss they are in a reasonably good position.

He says it was pretty flat to start with and India batted well and they were lucky to get a few wickets at the end to pull it back.

Neil Wagner, Ish Sodhi and Mark Craig all picked up a wicket while Murali Vijay has top scored for India with 65.
