Emergency services are at the scene of a fatal rubbish truck accident on Auckland's North Shore.

One person is dead and another is trapped after the truck overturned on steep Hebe Place in Birkenhead.

Kauri Road has also been cordoned off by police, and Auckland Council is also responding.

Six fire trucks and six ambulances are also at the scene with residents blocked from walking down to their homes on Hebe Place.

Police are allowing them to leave, but if they need to get back in, they have to park their car and walk.

Authorities are urgently trying to remove the rubbish truck because diesel is spilling out of it and going into the water.

Fire trucks with haulage equipment from Balmoral and Auckland City have arrived to help pull it out.

A second tow truck has also arrived.

Inspector Lou Alofa briefed media at the scene.

"A truck has overturned and fell down a bank of approximately 10 metres deep. One occupant, I can confirm, has suffered moderate injuries, the other occupant is now deceased."
