It has pipped its strong opening weekend box office with an bigger take on its second weekend - and its gross ticket sales have sailed past $3 million in less than two weeks at the cinema.
The film pulled in $1,324,274 on its second weekend, after an opening weekend take of $1,319,365.
After a first-week box office of $1,745,090, the film has passed $3 million in total earnings, meaning it is already the country's seventh top-grossing locally-backed film.
Wilderpeople follows the pattern of Waititi's Kiwi box office champ Boy. It kicked off with a relatively modest $600,000 opening in 2010 but increased its take on the following four weekends.
Boy ended up with a local box office gross of more than $9 million, which is still the biggest take for a New Zealand film at home.
Waititi's previous local feature, 2014's What We Do in the Shadows, grossed slightly over $2.5 million at NZ cinemas.
Wilderpeople had a reported production budget of $3 million.
