If you’ve seen the metal scene in the past few years, the well of talent hasn’t run dry on anyone in the Iron Maiden clan.

Even outside of the main members of the band still delivering both live and on record, The Raven Age has become a metal force to be reckoned with, featuring the son of Steve Harris on lead guitar.
Though it might help to get a few tips from dear ‘ol Dad, the son of Janick Gers decided to go in a bit of a different direction with their music.

For this new project, Dylan Gers is going to be collaborating with Noah Yorke, son of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, to create what he calls “a more textured and detailed approach” compared to the previous single ‘Moon Rise.’

Although this might seem like an out-of-left-field kind of pairing, both sides actually have a fair amount in common once you start listening to what we have so far.

Going off of what was happening on ‘Moon Rise,’ you can see how some of the more spacey sounds of Radiohead would be informing a lot of his creative choices, sounding almost like a more epic version of what you would hear out of Radiohead’s ‘90s material before they went into electronic territory.

And considering Noah’s first steps into his own solo work with songs like ‘Trying Too Hard,’ you can definitely see how both of them would work off each other really well, having a similar downtempo groove and wanting to create something that’s much more atmospheric than what either of their dads had previously worked on.

That family resemblance does transition over to the music in both cases though, and you can hear both of them cribbing from their ancestry, from ‘Moon Rise’ actually having a similar ominous sound that you hear in the breakdown of ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ and ‘Trying Too Hard’ having that kind of soft-hearted sadness that could be a part of a number of Radiohead’s ballads.
This is not meant to be just a fun vanity project, though. Each of these guys is looking to work outside of their parents’ shadow and deliver us something that’s a lot more forward-thinking than what the old guard has done. Let’s just hope that it just falls more on the Maiden side of the spectrum once it drops in early December.
