It's been a tumultuous year for Weezer. They were working on what frontman Rivers Cuomo calls a “quirky, personal, non-commercial album with no big guitars,” and then the band got booked for the Hella Mega Tour.

“We were like, ‘Okay, we just made the worst possible type of album you could make before a stadium rock tour,’” he explained in an interview with NME. So they went to work on a guitar-heavy album: Van Weezer. They began its rollout — sharing singles "Hero," "The End Of The Game," and "Beginning Of The End" — and then the pandemic hit and the tour was delayed.

"So we were like: Well, now we’ve just made the worst possible album for a time when you can’t actually tour or perform or rock out,” Cuomo said. “When nobody is going to concerts, how can you possibly promote a stadium rock album?”

After ping-ponging, they decided to release that quirky album, OK Human, after all. And now Cuomo thinks the timing couldn't be better. “This is probably the best possible time for this album,” he admitted. “It’s about feeling isolated and alienated and secluded, so it’s the perfect album for now.”

OK Human is slated for a January 29 release.
