The creator of popular cartoon series Rick and Morty has confirmed fans' worst fears after revealing the show hasn't been renewed for a fourth season.

Dan Harmon took to Twitter to reveal the bad news explaining that network Adult Swim hadn't ordered any new shows.

Fans raged at the news, with many calling Harmon a "lazy alcoholic" for not finishing the fourth series, prompting the creator to bite back.

"I hear ya, tough spot. On one hand, it can be challenging, especially with crippling lazy alcoholism, to write a show that hasn't been ordered by a network. On the other hand, the thought that fans like you pay the price ... I mean ... I'm gonna grab a drink," he responded.

The show had previously warned viewers that season four likely wouldn't be ready for "a really long time".

An ex writer of the show also said in December that fans probably have to wait until 2019, admitting that no one had actually starting writing a fourth show.

The writer also suggested that the 18-month gap between season two and season three was because Harmon, co-creator Justin Roiland, and Adult Swim "didn't get their s**t together".
