“Get your hands of me, you, damn, dirty Ape!” – Now let’s face it, majority of you all familiarize yourself with ‘Planet of the Apes’ either from the hilariously bad, Original or you are simply like me, and your familiarity is drawn from watching old re-runs of ‘The Simpsons’ as Troy McClure uproariously leads us into the prodigious ‘Dr Zaius’. (Now that song is stuck in your head, you’re welcome) Either way the ‘Planet of the Apes’ saga continues on throughout the generations as a large ‘What If’ posed to the audience in, “Could Monkey’s really take over the world?” Well, I guess we are about to find out… Again.

The title gives away the plot line, as it is the ‘Dawning’ of the Planet of the Apes Uprising. We have already had the ‘Rise’ and now we are awaiting the follow up. The last piece in the Ape puzzle left me bored and unentertained and I had zero to little hopes about this film, with the trailers even looking like a yawn-fest from the get go. However, if you want someone to bring life to a CGI Ape, then you look no further than ‘Andy Serkis’. Now Serkis is an actor whom has really progressed his skills through animated acting, we have seen him as Peter Jackson’s humanity puppet playing both Golem from ‘Lord of The Rings’ and as The King of the jungle himself in ‘King Kong’. Serkis’ portrayal of ‘Caesar’ is what holds the entire film together and actually brings it to life, drawing at least some interest to the film itself, however, it is simply not enough.

‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ simply put, is a 45 minute movie over extended into 2 and a bit hours. At times you find yourself struggling to pay attention as over exaggerated dialogue floods the screen while you try not to bury your face into the overly salted popcorn that then proceeds to burn your eyes, putting them out of their misery. So if you want to see a bunch a monkey’s throwing poop at each other, go to the Zoo or simply watch the Government attempt to reason with one another. But if you are curious for the next piece in the puzzle, by all means cure your curiosity and see the film, but I would wait till it comes on DVD or NETFLIX.

Overall I give this film a 2/10 and a Salute to Dr Zaius
