5 underrated Horror Movies to scare the sh*t out of your Date Night

You know the feeling. Scrolling through the channels trying to find a good horror movie and all you see are bad reviews and 1 or 2 stars. Well despite the reviews, here are some underrated horror movies that are proven to make you and your date jump, scream, and hide under the covers.


1. Babadook (2015): Overlooked by horror fans but loved by movie critics, Babadook is an Australian/Canadian thriller that will keep you awake at night. Widowed mother, Amy is struggling to raise her troubled son, Samuel. One day, she finds a book called Babadook to help put him to sleep. However, sleep is far from their minds as the character from the book leaps off the pages and haunts their house. The sinister monster lurks around their house, causing Amy to question her sanity.

2. Oculus (2014): Mirrors are said to be portals for ghosts and spirits – their entrance into the living world. Two siblings, Tim and Kaylie, experience the powers of the mirror first hand in the 2014 film, Oculus. As teenagers, their parents were brutally murdered and Tim, convicted of the killings, served his time in a mental institution. Years later, Tim is free and tries to lay the past to rest. However, Kaylie realises that Tim may have been innocent and an ominous force inside their antique mirror may hold the answers they’ve been looking for.

3. An American Haunting (2005): Based on Tennessee folklore, An American Haunting is about the only recorded case in American history where a person’s death was directly attributed to an attack by an evil entity. The film follows the very normal life of the Bell family of Red River, Tennessee. However, their uneventful life takes a drastic turn with the arrival of a black wolf. The daughter is tormented and the family is cursed as they frantically search for a rational explanation. This underappreciated horror movie will make you want to sleep with the lights on.

4. Drag Me to Hell (2009): Fans of the Exorcist and Evil Dead will love the 2009 film, Drag Me to Hell. In this horror story, Christine Brown is cursed by a vengeful gypsy. The curse, embodied by a demonic goat called the Lamia, torments its victims for three days before claiming its prize and dragging it to hell.

5. Darkness Falls (2003): The Tooth Fairy is known as a generous fairy that brings joy to children in their time of pain. However, in this rendition, the Tooth Fairy is the source of the pain. In this story, the Tooth Fairy can’t go in the light, and if you wake up to see her, she will kill you. The protagonist of the film, Kyle wakes up in the middle of the night to see the Tooth Fairy trying to kill him. 12 years later, Kyle goes back to his hometown of Darkness Falls to help another boy in the firing range of the malevolent Tooth Fairy.
